Food Cravings

Its funny how my taste buds have changed since we became pregnant. I mean we've all heard about how women have food cravings etc but until you experience it yourself, you never really know how drastic a change it can be - the power of hormones!

Here are some food quirks I've gone through over the past four months ... not sure what other changes awaits me in the next 5.5 months!

1) I've not touched yakult in four months!! I use to drink four bottles in 2 days! I don't know how it happened. I was just having my after-dinner fix one day, took a sip of it and decided, gee, I can't swallow this drink!

2) Baby LOVES ribena!! We use to drink quite a far bit of this but not in recent years especially since my elder sis left for the States. There's something about the tanginess that stirs my taste buds and it has taken over yakult as my after-dinner treat!

3) No to ice-cream. I think I'm slowly getting over this phase cos just last week, I asked the hubs to go get my favourite haagen daz coffee-almond bar. But in the first trimester, I was almost adverse to ice-cream. We use to have ice cream treats at least once a week - be it Mac's 70cents ice cream soft serve or a nice after lunch treat of Awfully Chocolate's creamy chocolate ice cream. Not anymore. Ditto for chocolates.

4) Tomato sauce phase! Throw in tabasco's sauce into this phase as well. I was drenching my sandwiches in tabasco's sauce and having major cravings for tomato pasta, hainanese pork chop with tomato gravy and stuffing tomatoes into my sandwiches - something I never liked to do cos it makes my crusty bread soggy! I think it was just a case of Sour -100 Sweet - 0.

5) Noodles - 100, Rice - 0. I've never been a rice person but never a huge noodle fan either. Just generally not a carb person other than bread and pasta. But our little pumpkin is a typically Asian kiddo. Not impressed with Mummy's fancy italian diet, little pumpkin much prefers Asian noodles! Teochew kway teow soup is high on the list, followed by thin strands of bee hoon in rich prawn broth aka Hae-Mee. The cravings were so great, I ate my hae-mee despite the itch it gave me! (I'm midly allergic to prawns!) And the strangest thing - I'll happily eat up the mee-sua my mum prepared. I H-A-T-E mee sua all my life. I hated how it turned all soggy and slimy when soaked in soupy broth. Boy does pregnancy turn your diet upside down!!

6) Vinegar rules! It's the sour over sweet thing. My meals request baffled the hubs when I started asking for bar chor mee and lor mee for lunch. I've not even eaten lor mee in like a gazillon years!! I figured it was a combination of craving both vinegar and noodles that's why.

7) Simplicity is the order of the day! In the early weeks of the first trimester, I went through a strange plain white porridge and perserved spicy beancurd phase. That's all I wanted to eat really and I recall having it for both lunch and dinner one day. Nothing else, just porridge and my preserved beancurd! Comforting and perhaps just the kind of diet I could stomach at that point.

But I've been a pretty considered pregnant women. The hubs hasn't been sent on mid-night supper errands just to satisfy my crazy cravings. The most he had to do was whip up of a peanut butter sandwich late in the night just so that I don't run hungry. Not too demanding I reckon!

Stay tune to see if little pumpkin decides to have a change in menu this 2nd trimester!
