Kairos

I was putting Julianne to bed last night like I always do, singing to her as she suckled on that last bottle for the day.  It was just like any other night really, just that it was a Sunday evening and perhaps that bit more special especially after spending a long weekend with her (we had taken Friday off).

I usually keep her upright for a while after her feed with her lying on my shoulder - especially cause she has reflux – before putting her in her crib.  But last night, after keeping her up, I cradled her in my arms, just gently rocking her or what we like to call ‘baby baby’ with the lullaby playing in the background.  Not that she’s a big girl now, just that we don’t carry her cradle style so much anymore now that she’s bigger.

It was just a very special moment and was perhaps what the writer of this blog calls ‘Kairos moments’. I quote, “Kairos is God’s time.  Its time outside of time.  It’s metaphysical time. It’s those magical moments in which time stands still.”  I thought of how we went through those challenging months coping with her reflux.  The many breakdowns I had because it pained me so much seeing her reject her bottle, reject nursing and reject drinking in general.  How my heart sank when she lost weight for the first time (and thankfully the only time).  Then I thought about how good our God is getting her back on the bottle just in time for my return to work, slowly but surely healing her of her reflux which has improved tremendously today although we’re still keeping her on her medicines but cutting down the dosage.  I looked down at her and couldn’t help but feel silly about how worried I was about her development then because of her poor milk intake.  Today, our daughter is developing so well, – sitting up, calling out to us, exploring her little world with so much curiosity in her, smiling to everyone and being such a happy baby, I couldn’t be more proud of her.  And  I couldn’t be more thankful to God for every milestone she has hit and every breathe she has taken.  Julianne came to us after a previous lost and while I sincerely believe every parent will always be thankful for their child, I also believe it takes someone who has gone through losing a child to be thankful even for something as natural as breathing.

I prayed over her giving thanks for all these and where I am now in this chapter of my life - blessed with a supportive family, amazing husband and a beautiful daughter. I wished time stood still there and then. Where I wasn't busy trying to make her finish her pumpkin porridge or stoning at 3am with my breast pump or impatiently bouncing her rocker so that I could get some me-time when she napped.

It was a special time between me, her & God.  It was a kairos moment.

Letters to Julianne #9

Dearest Julianne,

You're two weeks shy of 7 months and in the past two weeks since your half year birthday, you have learnt so many new tricks and had your many firsts, Mama is truly excited at how you're developing.

Let's see.  You've started to sit up by yourself without us or pillows supporting you and can balance yourself for a good ten minutes or so before you do a humpty dumpty onto the bed.  You like sitting up by yourself.  You'll start smiling and flapping your hands in excitement whenever you're in a sitting position.  Tired of lying on your back and tummy for the past 6 months huh?

Sitting up like a big gal

More interestingly, you're showing signs of understanding what we say and tell you.  The very first word you showed you understood was the word 'pat pat'.  You always pat pat the characters in your bed-time books.  Then the other day, when I casually just said 'pat pat Mama', you started doing the 'pat pat' action on my arm.  We confirmed that it was no fluke when you when around giving everyone including your soft toys little pat pats.  You also understand 'turn the page' - yet another instruction you learn from your bed time reading routine.  You are the official 'turn the page' person during our bedtime storytime sessions.

Oh oh oh and this trick is the cutest - doing the twinkle twinkle little star action - whenever we start singing the twinkle twinkle little star nursery rhyme!  Seeing is believing so here's video Papa took for posterity.  Yiyi Sam taught you this trick and we've been making you repeat it over and over again just because it is so adorable to see your little hand open and shut.

And so to reward you for all that hard work you've done this month, we brought you on your many firsts. Like your first picnic where you saw a live fish for a first time and your first swim where you showed us how much you enjoyed the pool.  Soon, we'll be taking you on your very first holiday!! Air tickets have been booked and your very own bassinet seat secured!! Mama can't wait for December!! Yes its still some time away with lots of growing up to in between but still, its always nice to know that a holiday awaits.  Its your incentive to do more growing up little pumpkin!

Papa and Mama are truly happy at how well you're developing and we know how very proud you are of yourself whenever you hit these milestones.  They are like giants in your little baby world ain't they?  But you accomplish them all in your time!  We are so proud of you Julianne!

Continue to have fun growing up and Mama promise you that more exciting days are ahead of us especially come July!! I can't wait!!!

Love you so much,
Mama

My first Mothers' Day

Its technically my first Mothers' Day, since this time last year, Julianne was still in utero.

I think in the midst of all the great lessons I have learnt - changing diapers, nursing, doing with little sleep etc - over the past six months as a Mom, the greatest has to be learning to appreciate my own mother a lot more.  And having my mom sacrifice her work to help me take care of Julianne showed me that a mother's role and love doesn't just end when her children are grown up, it continues, with even more love to take care of her children's children.

So though I've been a Mom for six months now, I don't quite feel I've done as much as my mother to deserve celebrating Mothers' Day.  Still it was nice to receive flowers from Julianne (well the Papa actually) and even nicer to hear Julianne call out "Mama" (though I'm really not sure if she was really calling me or just being her usual chatty self so I'm not getting too excited for now yet).

We had a lovely brunch at Hummerstones - cosy little place with just the kind of food that's up our alley.  Eggs benedict, yummy pancakes and very child friendly.

With Julianne by my side and the husband by my other and with Mom, Dad and Sam also with us at the table, I couldn't ask for a better way to spend my first Mothers' Day.

My first Mothers' Day - with Julianne my precious stream

She ....

She is the reason for good seats on SQ and discounted car servicing.

She is the reason we can never find things in our rooms because she doesn't believe in organised mess.

She is also the reason why our rooms are always so neat.

She is the reason we are constantly being nagged at.

She is also the reason we learn discipline and grow up.

She is the reason for yummy dinners and nourishing soups every night.

She is the reason I have two wonderful girls to call my sisters.

She is the reason I go to work with a peace of mind.

She is the reason that Julianne is so well taken care of.

She is the reason I have such a wonderful Mom.

She is the reason we celebrate Mothers' Day.

Happy Mothers' Day Mom!!

Julianne's first swim

Julianne's 1st swim by pz.sher
Swimming is so much fun!!
Now that she's 6 months old, we thought it'll be a good time to get her acquainted with the pool!  And what better present to receive from my sister Serene than a lovely Gap cheery swimming costume that comes with a cute little hoodie!!

We couldn't wait to dress Julianne in it.  So on our mid-week off the other day, we brought Julianne on her very first swim at our condo pool.  The Papa for one was more excited than her.  He sacrificed his lunch the day before to go get her a float and some swim diapers.  Then on the day of the swim itself, he insisted I woke her up from her afternoon nap so that we could beat those clouds that were threatening to rob us of pool time!

I'm glad we made it, even though it was a short 10 minute dip before the skies gave way.  Julianne was clearly very thrilled with swimming in a big bath tub!  She has always enjoyed bathe time so it was no surprise that she took so well to the pool.  She started a little apprehensive, wondering what was going on but in no time, she was smiling and kicking in that Disney float Papa got.

As soon as we got up from the pool, Grandma swaddled her up with layers of towel just to make sure she didn't catch a chill.  Our daughter likes being swaddled and I think she was enjoying the post-swim cuddle from Por Por just as much as the water.

So glad she enjoyed herself!!  Thanks Yiyi Rene for the cute little costume!!

My first picnic!

My first picnic! by pz.sher
My very first picnic!!

Sam's friend Ellie came back from France recently and bought the family our favourite proscuitto! How sweet of her!! So my greedy father decided to put it to good use and suggested we bring Julianne on her very first picnic!!

We had grand plans to leave the house by 730am before the weather gets too hot (which happens around 830am these days with the insane heat wave we've been experiencing).  But clearly our daughter knew better that the weather today would be so gorgeous, she decided that she'll sleep in till 7am, one hour pass her usual time.  So we didn't get to leave the house till 8am!  It didn't matter though cos we really had such a lovely morning weather - perfect for a picnic by the beach!!

With our baskets filled with proscuitto, brie cheese, olives and sun dried tomatoes, we were off to Julianne's very first picnic!! We found a lovely spot, laid our table cloth and sat down for a lovely breakfast.  Of course Julianne had none of the said food but was happy taking in the fresh air and listening to the waves!! She also saw some folks fishing and according to my dad was so thrilled when she actually saw a live fish they caught!!

I think she enjoyed herself out at the beach!! If only our weather would be this nice all year round, this family would definitely make picnics a common weekend fixture!

Letters to Julianne #8

Dearest Julianne,

Has it really been half a year already with you in our lives?  I can’t figure if time has passed us by so quickly or that it feels like you’ve been around for such a long time already.  Your Papa and I are always lamenting how we have forgotten how you were like when we first brought you home and how we went through those early days.

1 week old

6 months old

You’ve been going places this past month.  Mainly food places and the supermarket actually.  Yah, we’re starting you young on the Koh family’s favourite past-time – eating! And it seems like you have some of that genes in you, much preferring your solids to your milk.  You will happily empty your lunchtime bowl of porridge that grandma cooks but fight us at the bottle when you’re in one of those bottle strike moods (which sadly still happens quite often) though things are much better compared to your 30ml a feed days.

Grandma is now your primary care giver having given up her job to take care of you.

Kisses from Por Por

Thankfully, you haven’t given her too much trouble and know how to make her happy with your smile.  We call it the bou-gay smile and it’s gonna be that till your little teeth sprout out.  You have since settled into a nice routine since Mama went back to work.  A typical day for you goes like this:

630am   Rise and shine.  You’re a morning person like Mama and have always been an early risen since birth.  Which suits us just fine since we get to play with you for a bit before heading off to work
7am       After cuddling in bed with Papa and Mama, I give you a washing up and change you out of your pjs before bringing you downstairs to greet your best friend – Gong Gong – who’ll be reading the papers. This is probably your noisiest hour of the morning when everyone wants a share of you.  You join us at the table for breakfast and start reaching out for whatever we’re eating.  Grandpa sometimes brings you for a little morning walk down the street before we feed you your reflux medicine.  By about 815am, Papa and Mama kiss you goodbye and head to work.
9am       Peace for the next 9 hours or so.  It’s pretty much just you, Por Por and Aunty Joy.  Por Por gives you your morning feed and you usually go down for a 2 hour nap.  You still take your naps in your rocker which you’re clearly outgrowing!  I don’t know how long you want to nap in that thing!  Por Por tried putting you to sleep on her bed but only succeeded once when you slept for an hour.  We haven’t been able to repeat that magic ever since!
11am     You’re up from your nap and spend the next 3 hours or so playing with Por Por.  You get another bottle after your morning nap followed by your favourite lunch of pumpkin or sweet potato porridge around 12ish.  Por Por says this is your most talkative time of the day when you can go on ooohing and ahhing.  Your favourite line is ah mamaaaa, erhmmmm. I’ll like to think you’re trying to call Mama!!

2pm       You go down for your afternoon nap, another 2 hours or so.
4pm       Por Por gives you an afternoon TV treat of Baby TV or Disney Junior on cable.  You will sit in your favourite pea pod cushion, cross your legs, hang your arms loose (like a Samseng kid) and stay glued to the telly.  I don’t encourage but I know Por Por needs a little break too so I just close an eye! But strictly those two channels!

Glued to the telly!

530pm  You get a tea time treat of either rice cereal or oatmeal mixed with your favourite pear puree!  By this time, you would have gone through about two changes of clothes but still stink from perspiring all day!
630pm  You hear the shouts of “Jujubee! Jujubee!!” as everyone comes home.  Papa and Mama usually make it home before Gong Gong and Yiyi Sam does.  When you see me, you greet me with your biggest smile.  Then almost always, you’ll turn to Por Por and give her a bewildered look, as if asking for permission to be ‘returned’ to Mama’s cuddles! It’s so adorable to watch! Then I’ll bring you to the gate to wait for Gong Gong.  You start kicking your legs the minute you see the car drive into the car porch.  And when Gong Gong appears, you give him your megawatt smile without him having to do anything.  He just needs to stand in front of you.  it’s like your day is finally complete seeing him!

Daily walks with gong gong

7pm       We play with you, feed you your 2nd dose of meds, then slowly wind you down for the day with a warm bath.  Your Papa calls it your personal onsen! We bundle you up in your PJs, then bring you down to join everyone at the dinner table.  In the meantime, in your room, the lights are dimmed, aircon on, black-out curtains drawn and your lullaby music starts playing in the background.
8pm       We’re done with dinner, you say your goodnights, fly your kisses and we take you up with your final bottle for the day.  Mama will sing to you as you drink up your bottle.  Halfway through the feed, we’ll burp you while reading your go-to-bed books.  You get very excited the moment you see your books and will even make noises as we read.  You know how to turn the pages when we tell you to and you love kissing the animals in your book – each and every one of them.  We finish up your milk and you usually end up falling asleep while doing so.  I nurse you for a bit just for comfort after an entire day of sucking on rubber before finally putting you down in your crib.
2am       You usually start to stir demanding for a feed which I dutifully still give to you.  I’m not sure if you’re really hungry or its just out of habit.  But since you’re not drinking tremendously well in the day, I figure you still need the night feeds.  I enjoy nursing you cos its our time, just you and me so I’m not complaining.
6am       Your body alarm clock is triggered.  I nurse you once again and you usually don’t fall back to sleep cos you somehow know its morning.  We play in bed, waking your Papa up and then your day starts all over again!  I should add that one crazy thing your Papa has started on recently is playing the Majulah Singapura song at this hour and pretend he’s raising the flag while drawing up the curtains.  You get extremely thrilled when you hear the national anthem – I’m impressed at how patriotic you are at this age!  We should get extra baby bonus for that!

On your development, you have started to take baby steps in the crawling department.  It happened last week when you crawled from one end of Por Por’s bed to the other to lick Yiyi Sam’s leg! I wished I was there to see you hit that milestone.  It thrills you that you can sit up by yourself (albeit not very long).  You’re always smiling to yourself whenever you’re seated with that smug look on your face.  It’s like you know this is tough work but yet you could do it! And because of this, we’ve graduated you to your high chair!  You can finally join us at the dinner table!!

Our new guest at the dinner table!

You can also hold your own bottle, something that Por Por taught you caused she wanted to involve you in the drinking business.  Apparently you drink better when you get to participate in feed times.  You are one inquisitive child.  Whenever you hear us talking, you literally stop whatever you’re doing and stare up at us as if you understand what we’re talking about.  Kay-poh is your middle name.  I love that curiosity in you though, it makes you such an alert child wherever we go cos you’re so eager to see new things and explore the big world around you.

You are clearly the darling of the family, a position Yiyi Sam gladly gives up for you so that you can now tie with cousin Sophie.  If only cousin Sophie was here, it would be so fun to see the both of you play together.

Continue growing my sweet child.  The coming month promises more exciting meal times as I plan to introduce other foods to you and more adventurous weekends to parks and beaches.  If you’re good, I may even throw in a swimming session or two so that you can parade in your new swim suit that’s making its way here from Ann Arbor!

Happy half year Jujubee!

Love,
Mama
